The Flinders District Lions Club

16 June 2022

The Flinders District Lions Club is a dedicated group of 44 Flinders district locals, who work hard throughout the year to fundraise for the disadvantaged living on the Mornington Peninsula. Although starting this financial year with Covid restrictions in place, they have managed to raise over $85,000.

The Club is currently working with the Southern Peninsula Community Centre on a mobile bathroom and laundry van project, to assist homeless people on the Peninsula of which a surprisingly large number are women in the 50+ age group. This project will be supported by a matching grant from the Australian Lions Foundation and the Lions Clubs International Foundation, as well as local Lions and benevolent individuals. The project cost will be in the order of $55,000 and is to be manufactured by Jayco.

In the Mornington Peninsula Shire Australia Day Awards 2022 the Flinders District Lions Club was awarded the Mornington Peninsula Community Event of the Year for the Flinders Motoring Heritage Event. Held on Easter Sunday, this wonderful event hosts an impressive display of unique veteran, vintage, classic and modern motor cars and bikes, all displayed throughout the Flinders Village. Now in its 7th year, the number of entrants has grown to nearly 200 vehicles and over 2,000 visitors this year.

Other key fundraising events for the Lions include the Annual Charity Golf Day (in it’s 35th year), Pink Ribbon Breakfast (in its 11th year), and continued assistance with the Red Hill Market and Red Hill Show car parking and other commercial parking contracts.

Monica Holland is the current Lions Club President and follows her husband Mark who is the immediate past President (2016-21). They have been permanent Flinders locals for over 17 years but have family connections stretching back to the late 1800’s. They love living in Flinders and were drawn back here because of the family connections and of course, its breathtaking topography of rolling hills and ocean. Having recently taken up golf, Monica loves spending time on the Flinders Golf Course with friends.

The greatest satisfaction in recent years has been the membership growth of the club, which in turn has helped each and every major project area grow and develop, none of which could occur without the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of the Lions’ members.
